At 5 a.m. Hawaii time, the center of Calvin was 2,075 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving westward at 16 mph.
The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.
Additional strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Calvin is forecast to become a hurricane on Thursday.
On its present track, Calvin is expected to cross into the Central Pacific either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
